DARE

Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) is a 17-week comprehensive program between the Schools and the Police Department. The officer visits each classroom of the local 5th or 6th grade elementary Schools each week for about one hour.

Each week's lesson builds off of the previous week's lesson, so as they work like stepping stones for the overall goal of the kids learning to say no to drugs and violence.

Lessons are taught on consequences of your actions, and of using or not using drugs, peer-pressure and how to resist it. Also taught is how the media tries to influence us, self-esteem and how important it is, violence and how to stay out of trouble.

The kids participate in the lessons by role-playing, play-acting, reading and breaking down into group activities.

SCHOOL LIAISON

The Antigo Police School Liaison program was established in 1997 by a joint effort of the Antigo Police Department and the Unified School District. Initially the program placed a uniformed officer in the High School and the Middle School. The Officer was also a Dare Instructor to the City of Antigo 5th grade classes. The 1999-2000 school year provide some changes to the program. The Officer is now in plain clothes and a separate Officer teaches the Dare classes. This allows the Police School Liaison Officer to dedicate more time to the High School and the Middle School. The goal of the program is to open the communication between the Police Department and the Schools to effectively problem solve the legal issues at the School and provide a safe environment. The Police School Liaison Officer works closely with the School Administration to resolve any problems. The Police School Liaison Officer enforces all laws within and outside the school and is available for classroom presentations.
