Fire Prevention
The cornerstone of every fire
department's prevention efforts is public education. At the City of Antigo
Fire Department, our education program is very broad and covers a wide
range of topics as well as age groups. We offer free tours of our station
to all age groups as well as making appearances at various community events
and activities. One of the highlights of our public education program
is the Latchkey program. This is an educational curriculum that is delivered
by the firefighters to all of the third grade students in the City of
Antigo. The program covers a variety of safety issues that children in
that age group need to have a higherlevel of awareness about. The firefighters
meet once a month with the classes, participating in recess, lunch, and
a lesson during their visits. This program is consistently a highlight
of both the students' and firefighters' day. We also host an annual open
house as part of the latchkey program. This open house occurs in October
during fire prevention week. All five of the elementary schools in the
city of Antigo bring the third graders to the station to participate in
tours and hands on activities designed to increase students' fire safety
awareness.
Another public education activity
is the annual firefighter for a day program. Each year, the fifth graders
design a fire safety related project and the best projects are chosen
from each school. The participants then become firefighters for the day.
They participate in training exercises, station duties, meals, and other
activities throughout the entire day at the fire station. This activity
has been a memorable experience for many children.
Fire Inspection
Fire inspections are enforcement
of state and local laws designed to keep business occupants, owners, and
customers safe. First and foremost is life safety violations, the goal
being to prevent and correct any hazard that may pose an immediate danger
to someone's life. The second goal of fire inspections is property preservation.
Inspections are done on a yearly basis to help business and building owners
identify and correct anything that may fall into the two categories above.
With the cooperation of business owners, our department inspects each
business and commercial building in the city. This program is another
crucial component of our job, which in turn increases our community's
safety.
If you want to do an inspection
before we arrive, here are some items to check:
1. Are your marked exits unlocked
and free of obstruction?
2. Has your fire extinguishing
equipment been checked by a licensed fire extinguisher technician within
the last year?
3. Can you see any electrical
wiring that is exposed?
4. Are you using any extension
cords for more than three months?
5. Are there any flammable
liquids inside? Are they in a cabinet? Are they in the furnace room?
6. Are combustibles stored
too close to your furnace or gas water heater?
7. Is your exit sign visible
and lit at all times?
8. Do you have an address
clearly marked with three-inch letters facing the road?

If you have any problems with an inspection or if you
need an inspection completed feel free to contact the Antigo Fire Department. 715-623-3633 Ext. 4 |
