STREET DEPARTMENT

The mission of the City of Antigo Street Department is to coordinate all facets of the daily operations inherent in providing the community with safe streets. We provide residents and visitors with dependable street maintenance and repair service along with efficient snow and ice removal. Street department crews are also responsible for storm and sanitary sewer repairs and water system maintenance.

Twenty-one employees bring skills and knowledge to their own divisions as well as cross-train to assist each other when the need arrives. Central to our mission is the ability to respond accurately and courteously to complaints and concerns of local residents.

SPRING REMINDERS

This is a reminder from the City of Antigo that it is unlawful to place grass clippings in the streets and alleys. We ask that you direct the blower away from the street and clean up any grass clippings. Grass can easily enter the storm sewer, which can cause the storm sewer drains to plug causing flooding as well as end up in the river. Clippings contain phosphorus which can turn lakes green with algae. The clippings further pose a risk to motorcyclists. Clippings picked up by street sweepers must be sent to the landfill, costing taxpayers money.

This is a violation of Sec. 6-2-16 of the City of Antigo Municipal Code. Sec. 6-6 (b) of the City of Antigo Municipal Code states that lawns and/or grasses in excess of a height of 6 inches will be declared a public nuisance. Sec. 6-6 (e)  states that the weed commissioner shall determine with reasonable certainty whether a public nuisance exists and shall cause for written notice to be served that the city proposes to cut to conform to this section. Sec. 6-6 (g) states that the city will cut to conform and the owner will be charged the cost plus administrative fee established in section 1-22 of the Code.

If a complaint is received the owner will receive a letter and must bring the property into compliance within 5 days or the City will bring the property into compliance and will charge the following: Service Fee $100 per hour (minimum of one-half hour) and Administration Costs.

If there are further occurrences within one calendar year, the property will be brought into compliance without further notification and the owner billed accordingly. The City prefers not be in the landscaping business and would much rather see property owners maintain their properties as required.
